About me

I am an enthusiastic microbiologist based in Nigeria, with a rich experience of over 20 years in virology.

Academic & Professional Profile

Marycelin Baba has a Bsc in Microbiology (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria), MSc in Virology (1992) and PhD in Virology (2005) at University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She holds a Certificate in Health Planning and Management (MHPM) and a Masters degree in Health Planning and Management. After a one year conversion course, she became an Associate Member of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (AMLSCN). She became a Senior Lecturer in University of Maiduguri in 1999 and in 2009, she was promoted to the position of a Professor in University of Maiduguri. She started the Department of Medical Laboratory Science as the only staff and Head in 2004 and in 2012, she has graduated 4 sets of Professionals in Medical Laboratory Science with over 30 staff. She was the pioneer Technical Supervisor of National Polio Laboratory, Maiduguri in 1999 and in 2006, she was elevated to the position of a Director.

What I do

I am actively involved in the Polio eradication program.  I served in the Expert committee for pandemic Influenza and Stakeholders’ Forum for Lassa fever virus in 2005 and 2007 respectively. I m a Member of the Board of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (2009-2012).  In October 2016, I joined the services of WHO/AFRO as the Technical Officer, Environmental Surveillance. I have over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles either as a lead or co- authors.

Consultancy

Having participated in various projects in virology and related fields locally and internationally, my wealth of experience is an indispensable treasure to reseaarch-oriented institutions.

Research

As a professor of Medical Virologyy, I have a vast experience in international research which will be a great boost to any research team

Life is not complete without giving. One of my little way of giving back to the society is the training of up-coming researchers in my field of expertise.

Polio Eradication Program

• Pioneer Technical Supervisor of WHO National/ITD Polio Laboratory, Maiduguri, Nigeria • Director of WHO National/ITD Polio Laboratory, Maiduguri, Nigeria (2006) • Isolate and identify poliovirus isolates from acute Flaccid paralysis (AFP) and sewage • Conduct researches that complement global efforts on polio eradication program in Nigeria

• Participate in the classification of inadequate and adequate polio cases • Participate in the supervision of Supplementary Immunization Activities • Attend joint meetings of National Polio Committees including National Certification Committee, National Task Force, Expert Review Committee on Polio and occasional visit to Polio Emergency Operation Centre meeting
